Guinness world Record for:
‘Longest-Running Mechanical Spinning Top(prototype)’
Personal Project, 2018-2020
My record: 39 hrs 28mins 15 secs
I have always been fascinated by spinning objects and toys. Rotational Mechanics was a favorite subject in high school physics.
This is a passion project undertaken to establish a new record for the longest-running spinning mechanical top prototype, breaking the previous 27.5 hr world record made by two Israeli companies.
I experimented with different operating principles and made 20-30 prototypes for each kind. like epoxy casting using 3D-printed molds and embedding electronics in the tops, they only spun for 10 minutes.
The breakthrough came with adding a spinning mass, providing the reaction torque needed to maintain balance.
Final Design Principle: Rotating disc on top
In picture: Prototype with 6 parallel stacks of 3 cells in series.
The final prototype:
Battery: 12 button cells arranged in 6 parallel stacks of 2 cells each. 3V, 3600 mAh
1 coreless micromotor, 3x 3D printed pieces: battery holder/main body, Flywheel, body cap.
Here you can see different battery configurations resulting in varying shape/size of the tops.
For recording the world record attempt 4 cameras rolling so that I never missed anything. There were witnesses observing the event. I was great fun.
I barely slept (40 mins) during the 40 hrs of the record attempt!
